BEHIND THE PICK

Everyone knows Ylli loves to cook barrels with J. Mattingly because they give him full reign on blending and slapping all their barrels as if they were his own. On the Outfit’s last trip to Kentucky, he got the chance to play master blender once again. This was the same trip where the first ALCTD JMattingly was conceived.

After hours (no BS) of blending Ylli got his hands on some electric rye barrels. Long, being in his semi-tipsy state, was big chillin’ on a barrel drinking a non-Fiji brand of water. Ylli was running through damn near every single 95/5 rye stock they had at the warehouse playing with different ratios. It ended up being 3 barrels at a certain ratio that created Batch No.5 of the AWGF J. Mattingly line up. This meticulous blend was deemed worthy of adding it to the exceptional series we all know and love.

EDITOR’S NOTES: “Spicier, spicier, spicier!” Ylli exclaimed, as Cam and the bois at J. Matt kept feeding him barrel samples. This is also when I was watching Ylli thinking, “How the hell is this man not on the floor already?” (See our story about Good Times and the J. Matt ALCTD pick if you know how it ended after we left J. Matt)'

This truly is a rye drinker’s rye. I haven’t had a rye like this in a while. It reminded me of a time when I was a young lad on a road trip with friends, where we stopped by a gas station to fill up. My buddy came back in the car and I asked him, “What the hell is that’” as he pulled out what looked like a plastic bag with a pickle and looked me dead in the eye and said. “It’s a hot pickle” as if I have never seen/had one in my life. To this day, I know the smell and I can taste that through the air. Rye guy 4lyfe.
