NOSE: Sweet toasted oak, maple caramel, brown sugar, white pepper

PALATE: Fruity, citrus peel, dark cherries, grounded cinnamon, cocoa

FINISH: Long, silky oak tannins, hints of cherry and mint, Ethiopian coffee

BEHIND THE BOTTLE

No sexy story here - just good old sexy straight bourbon coming out of Old Louisville. FDI and ALCTD have been trying to get Old Louisville in Alaska for quite some time. They make amazing straight bourbon but also knock it out of the park when dealing in the light whiskey category. There are very few brands that have the reputation for having a 16 year old light whiskey so sought after.

Sitting at Ylli’s bar was Brady N. (resident pilot and friends with Old Louisville), they got on the subject of talking about Old Louisville and how they needed to get the brand into the market…this led to a selfie with some non-index fingers being sent over to Amine, the owner of Old Louisville to express how they felt about Old Louisville not being in AK.

A little sauce goes a long way. A few samples later came the inception of AK-1, the first barrel that was sent up to AK. Fun fact: Old Louisville has a tie in with Ylli’s Blackout whisky group, where they have bottled private labels before. This is how the resident chef himself knew the juice was good and must be shared with the Alaskan people.

Editor’s notes: I know you are all asking, if this was the first barrel, why did it take until now to release it? Call it a conscious decision. We waited until Xmas season to do a double drop of classic style straight bourbons, because look at those tasting notes…tell me that doesn’t scream winter whiskey. The fruitiness in the dram is mad. Also, I’m not a fan of fruity coffee, and I swear the finish is straight up Ethiopian coffee. The note works very, very well in this dram.
