BEHIND THE BOTTLE

Those who have talked to Ylli about Canadian whisky, knows that it’s generally not his jam. It was a warm spring day in Anchorage when Robert, from Avalanche spirits, rang Ylli to tell him he must swing by the office ASAP. Ylli arrives and was presented with a dram. ‘This is pretty good’ said Ylli, as he asks what he was presented. Robert, always the tease with his obsession with American Light, says ‘you’ll never guess what this is.’ Sure enough- Ylli states that he indeed did not know what style of whisky it was. When told it was Canadian, he exclaims to Robert ‘get the hell out of here.’

This was the oldest Canadian (whisky not women) Ylli has ever had. Where it expressed more American rye notes than anything he has had in the past. When he was informed it was a cognac finish, he was sold. The lush cognac and rye notes played so well together. And having the juice at 135 proof? Say less. For a Canadian rye, it blew Ylli’s mind. Hence, his palate left him no other choice than to slap his name on his first Canadian.

EDITOR’S NOTES: Hi all, Long here. Those of you who know me, know that I absolutely love good cognac. V.S., V.S.O.P. or X.O., I like whatever is good, no matter the classification. There’s a reason we only have 2-3 cognacs currently in the shop right now….big news coming. Enough cognac talk- let’s talk about this pick. At 18 years old, we know this was never going to be an American straight rye, but also look at it’s price, we also aren’t paying $400. That being said, I remember when Ylli told me he made this pick and the 18 years didn’t spark much interest, until he said cognac.

With Jefferson’s Rye and Redemption’s cognac finished bourb flying off the shelf due to the ‘cigar’ style of whiskey, I was suppppper curious what our resident chef ended up signing his name off on. I actually think we may only have one Canadian on the shelf at Allocated- because if we’re being frank, it’s made for mixin’. This is not. The majority of the notes above hilariously enough we both wrote down before we spoke it out loud. This pick slapps. The Cognac influence is there, and man o’ man does it play sooooo well with Newport cigarettes (this is what I think a lot of ryes taste like). Pick one up and see why ‘Mr. I don’t drink sexy finished suff regularly’ slapped his name on this juice that reminds you of grandpa.
