BEHIND THE BOTTLE

This barrel pick was never supposed to happen (reference BN.23.001 first paragraph). Fast forward- Ylli and Long met Chase (barrel merchant) and Jordan (barrel flavor enforcement officer). The gents at NULU were very excited to showcase many barrels, and thus the tasting began. Many barrels were sampled that day but there were two that shined above the rest, this amburana finished straight bourbon being one of them.

The truth of the matter is, amburana casks have been the hot new thing for a while now, so when the gents at NULU told Ylli and Long that they had two barrels, they thought they knew what to expect. For our new friends who don’t know what amburana is; it is a South American teak that grows in the jungles of Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and more. A cooper will build a barrel out of this wood and it is generally used to age Brazil’s most popular spirit, Cachaça. The wood gives off a very distinct baking spice and sugarcane profile. Robert has sampled Allocated on many amburana barrels, so Ylli and Long were interested to see what NULU was cooking.

From the two barrels presented, it was everything Ylli and Long expected with regards to nose, however the palate felt young and the finish was thin. As if- either it was in the amburana barrel for a little too short or the originating bourbon that was dumped in was too young. Jordan quickly mentioned the other one was better, which Ylli and Long were quick to want to make their judgements. Not knowing what the key factors from the two barrels were, they tried it and instantly thought that while it was only picking from 2 barrels, this one had the Goldilocks principle all over it.

Just the right amount of amburana influence, the cinnamon toast crunch note is too distinct while taking nothing away from the high rye bourbon that was chosen to be finished in the wood. Ylli and Long, to-date, have yet to find a better pairing than a fine maduro wrapped cigar and the AmBurr. It was truly a collaboration between Fiori and Allocated to ensure that this beautifully finished bourbon make it on the shelves in their patron’s homes, while still having more than enough to allow people to be served a dram with their favorite Fiori dish (#spicystuffedchicken).
